About this route

Vinschgau is the driest valley in the Alps, and the apple trees know it — they stand in disciplined rows, irrigated by the old Waale channels that still murmur beside the path. The ride from Mals runs downhill almost the whole way, which means you can spend your energy on stopping instead of pedalling. In May the orchards are white noise, literally: blossom in every direction. In September the air is sugar. Between the two you pass Kastelbell, where a handful of stubborn growers coax Riesling out of terraces most people would call unfarmable, and the bread bakers of Laas still shape Vinschger Paarl in pairs, the way they have since the monastery ovens.
