Grilled Zander from the lake with Burgenland potato salad
The reed cutters and the fishermen of Illmitz are often the same families, and the Fischerstube sits where their track meets the dyke. Zander — pike-perch — comes out of the lake at dawn, goes onto a charcoal grill at noon, and arrives with nothing more than lemon, parsley butter and a warm potato salad slick with pumpkin seed oil. Eat under the chestnut tree. The wind off the water does the air-conditioning.
Racks right by the terrace and they refilled all four of our bottles without being asked.
Fast service, we were back on the road in twenty minutes.
Nobody blinked at four people in lycra. Portions sized for riders.
Charged the battery over lunch, no charge for it.
