About this route

Neusiedler See barely has a shore; it has a reed belt, kilometres deep, that hides the water until the path lifts you onto a dyke and suddenly there it is, pale and endless. The loop is dead flat and almost entirely traffic-free, which makes the wind the only real climb of the day. Burgenland cooking is a border cuisine — Hungarian paprika, Austrian precision, Pannonian sun. Fishermen still bring zander and catfish out of the lake in the morning, and by noon it is on a plate under a chestnut tree. Later, in the Kellergasse lanes of Illmitz and Mörbisch, the cellar doors stand open and someone will pour you a Blaufränkisch whether you asked for one or not.
