About this route
The Weinstraße is a balcony road: on one side the Mendel ridge, on the other a shallow bowl of pergola-trained Vernatsch running down to the Kalterer See. It rolls rather than climbs, and the villages — Girlan, Kaltern, Tramin — are close enough together that you can taste your way from a farm inn to a Gewürztraminer cellar without ever feeling like you are training. Pack a swimsuit; the lake is genuinely warm by May.
